On the eve of Independence Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the creation of the Army Rocket Force Command, a new and historic addition to Pakistan’s military structure. The move marks a major leap in strengthening the nation’s conventional defence and ensuring long-range strike capability.
Addressing the ceremony in Islamabad, the Prime Minister said: “On this occasion, I announce the establishment of the Army Rocket Force Command”, calling it “equipped with modern technology and having the capability to strike at the enemy from different directions… another milestone in strengthening our conventional warfare capacity.”
The new command will oversee advanced missile systems — including ballistic and cruise missiles — designed to give Pakistan a stronger edge in safeguarding its sovereignty without relying on nuclear deterrence. This initiative reflects the country’s commitment to modernizing its defence posture and learning from recent challenges.
Security experts view the step as a strategic development that will bring Pakistan closer to global standards of modern warfare. Countries such as China and Iran have already established similar dedicated rocket forces, and Pakistan’s entry into this select group highlights its growing focus on innovation and preparedness.
The Army Rocket Force is expected to enhance not only military strength but also national confidence, providing Pakistan with greater flexibility in defence planning and ensuring that peace is preserved through credible deterrence.
Defence scholars believe this forward-looking initiative will play a key role in shaping Pakistan’s future military doctrine. Dr. Adil Sultan, dean of the Faculty of Aerospace and Strategic Studies (FASS) at Air University, noted that while details remain classified, the establishment of the command is a “significant development” that signals Pakistan’s determination to maintain security and stability in the region.
