Pakistan Set to Receive First Chinese-Built Hangor-Class Submarine in 2026 – Major Boost to Naval Strength
Pakistan’s naval modernisation is moving forward with confidence as the first of its advanced Hangor-class submarines, built under a strategic collaboration with China, is expected to join active service in 2026.
Speaking to Chinese media, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf confirmed that the landmark $5 billion submarine programme is progressing successfully. The eight state-of-the-art diesel-electric submarines—four being built in China and four in Pakistan—represent a transformative leap for the Pakistan Navy.
Admiral Ashraf highlighted that the project is not only strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defence, but also accelerating national self-reliance through technology transfer and local manufacturing at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works. This initiative will empower local industry, enhance skilled employment, and develop indigenous naval production expertise.
The Hangor-class submarines, along with the modern Type 054A/P multi-role frigates already in service, have significantly upgraded Pakistan’s capabilities in air defence, maritime surveillance, and anti-submarine warfare—ensuring greater security across the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean region.
“These platforms are playing a vital role in maintaining regional maritime peace, supporting safe trade routes, and contributing to global economic stability,” Admiral Ashraf noted.
He further shared that Pakistan and China are now exploring deeper collaboration in unmanned systems, AI, electronic warfare, and marine technology—marking the beginning of a new era of innovation and joint research.
With over 60% of China’s defence exports between 2020–2024 headed to Pakistan, both nations continue to strengthen a trusted partnership rooted in long-term strategic cooperation and shared vision for regional development.
The induction of these next-generation submarines will greatly enhance Pakistan Navy’s deterrence capability, operational reach, and readiness—reflecting Pakistan’s steady progress in maritime defence modernization
