Shehbaz Sharif Urges Fair Climate Finance at UN Event

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif urged the world community to deliver on climate finance commitments while highlighting Pakistan’s determined climate agenda during the UN Special Climate Event in New York.

He emphasized that debt-based funding cannot solve the global climate crisis, especially for vulnerable nations like Pakistan, which continues to recover from the historic 2022 floods and this year’s heavy monsoon rains. Despite minimal contribution to greenhouse emissions, Pakistan remains among the hardest hit.

Underscoring Pakistan’s proactive role, the Prime Minister shared that the country has already met its unconditional 15% emission reduction pledge and is on track to cut total emissions by 50%. Plans include boosting renewable and hydropower to 62% of the energy mix by 2035, shifting 30% of transport to clean mobility, and planting one billion trees to create a greener, more resilient future.

He reaffirmed that Pakistan’s strategy reflects not just necessity, but ambition—showcasing the country’s leadership in sustainable development and global climate responsibility.
