Pakistan’s Seafood Industry Reels in a Big Win: U.S. Export Green Light Extended for Four More Years

It’s time to give a round of applause to our seafood sector—it just landed a four-year export extension to the U.S.! That’s right, our fish and fish-product exports have been officially given the thumbs-up to swim into American markets through 2029.

Here’s what’s making waves:

  • Government confirmation: On August 30, 2025, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has deemed Pakistani fisheries “comparable” under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA)—a major eco-seal of approval.
  • Meaning of “comparable”: Basically, NOAA is saying Pakistan’s fisheries tick all the boxes—minimizing harm to marine mammals, embracing conservation practices, and fishing sustainably. That means our seafood meets strict U.S. standards.
  • Cha-ching! Financial impact: Currently, our seafood fetches around US $2 per kilogram globally. With this endorsement, that figure could rise—and fast—opening doors to Europe and Gulf markets as well.
  • Numbers that matter: In fiscal year 2024–25, Pakistan exported about 242,484 metric tons of seafood worth US $489.2 million—that’s the $2/kg average in action. If we maintain the same volume next year, we could be looking at nearly US $600 million in export value.
  • Beyond profit: This isn’t just about dollars. By aligning with NOAA’s requirements, Pakistan is reinforcing its credibility in sustainable fishing and marine life protection—good for business and biodiversity alike.
  • What’s next: The minister emphasized the need to step up marine mammal protection measures even more, following NOAA’s guidance. It’s one thing to get approved, but ensuring long-term marine health is even more important.

Why this matters for you—and for Pakistan:

  1. Economic boost
Four years of U.S. export approval means businesses can plan with confidence, potentially opening new and more lucrative markets. That’s strategic stability.
  2. Environmental leadership
Pakistan’s designation as “comparable” under the MMPA isn’t handed out lightly. It showcases our ability to balance commerce with conservation—something that resonates globally.
  3. Market expansion roadmap
With this U.S. nod, the door to European and Gulf markets looks wider. If seafood prices inch up beyond US $2/kg, every kilogram exported could mean more rupees back home.
  4. Sustainability commitment
Long-term success hinges not just on exports, but on maintaining health of marine ecosystems. NOAA’s trust raises the bar, and Pakistan seems ready to clear it.
