Rs 800m Flood Relief Announced as Deaths Cross 341 in KP

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has released Rs 800 million for flood-hit areas, with a special Rs 500 million package for Buner, the hardest-hit district. The devastation is staggering—341 deaths and 178 injuries have been confirmed in KP alone, according to the PDMA. Since late June, the nationwide toll has climbed to 660 deaths and 935 injuries.

Buner is reeling with 222 deaths and 120 injuries, making it the epicenter of tragedy. Other districts also suffered: Shangla reported 36 deaths, Mansehra and Bajaur 21 each, Swat 20, Lower Dir 5, Battagram 3, and Nowshera 2. Beyond the numbers, entire communities are facing collapsed houses, lost livestock, destroyed schools, and broken infrastructure.

Relief trucks have begun to roll—89 vehicles packed with tents, mattresses, blankets, kitchen kits, mosquito nets, and generators are already en route to affected areas. The federal government is also pitching in: the Prime Minister and cabinet pledged one month’s salaries to relief, while federal ministers are being sent to oversee recovery efforts. Institutions like the NDMA, NHA, FWO, and the Pakistan Army are all in the field, working on rescue and infrastructure repair.

But nature isn’t slowing down. A cloudburst in Swabi’s Gadoon Amazai killed 11 people—including children and women—while over 30 remain missing. In Murree, rainfall touched 74 mm in just hours, and more is expected across Punjab and KP. Medium-level flooding is already being reported in the Indus at Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa, with low-level threats on the Sutlej and Ravi. The NDMA warns that the monsoon isn’t done yet—final spells are likely by early September, and normalcy may only return by the end of next month.

The government’s quick release of billions in relief shows urgency, but the real test lies in execution. With Buner bleeding the most, weather still volatile, and communities hanging by a thread, this crisis is far from over.
