Pakistan Secures $320 Million AIIB Loan for N-5 Highway Reconstruction

Pakistan has secured a major $320 million loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to rebuild and upgrade critical sections of the country’s N-5 Highway under a new resilient infrastructure recovery initiative.

The agreement marks another important step toward improving Pakistan’s transport network, boosting regional connectivity, and strengthening climate-resilient infrastructure across key provinces.

Agreement Signed Between Pakistan and AIIB

The financing agreement was officially signed between Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Secretary Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai and officials from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

A separate implementation agreement was also signed with the National Highway Authority (NHA), which will oversee the execution of the reconstruction work.

Officials say the project will focus on Phase-IA of rebuilding strategic highway sections located in:

  • Sindh
  • Punjab
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The N-5 Highway is considered one of Pakistan’s most important road networks, connecting major cities, industrial zones, and trade corridors across the country.

Focus on Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Authorities say the reconstruction project is designed to improve the highway’s resilience against climate-related challenges, including floods and extreme weather events that have damaged road infrastructure in recent years.

The upgraded sections are expected to feature stronger engineering standards, improved road safety measures, and more sustainable infrastructure planning.

Pakistan has increasingly prioritized resilient infrastructure projects following devastating floods that affected transport and economic activity across multiple regions.

Boost for Trade and Economic Growth

Officials believe the N-5 Highway upgrade will also help improve trade movement and long-term economic growth by making transportation more efficient and reliable.

The highway serves as a major route for cargo movement, intercity travel, and regional commerce, making its rehabilitation crucial for Pakistan’s economic recovery and future development goals.

Improved connectivity between provinces is also expected to support businesses, logistics operations, and local communities that rely heavily on road transport.

Strengthening Pakistan’s Infrastructure Development

The AIIB-backed project reflects continued international support for Pakistan’s infrastructure modernization efforts.

With reconstruction now moving into implementation phases, authorities hope the upgraded highway system will contribute to safer travel, stronger trade routes, and more climate-adaptive infrastructure for the future.
