Pakistani Mountaineer Sohail Sakhi Summits Kangchenjunga, the World’s Third Highest Peak

Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi from Hunza has added another extraordinary achievement to his climbing career by successfully summiting Kangchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain standing at 8,586 metres in Nepal.

Sakhi reached the summit at approximately 12:15 am Nepal time after battling extreme weather and difficult climbing conditions during the demanding expedition.

The achievement is being celebrated as another proud moment for Pakistan’s mountaineering community, especially for climbers from Gilgit-Baltistan, a region known for producing some of the world’s most talented high-altitude athletes.

A Major Achievement in Extreme Conditions

Kangchenjunga is widely considered one of the most technically challenging mountains among the world’s highest peaks. Located on the border of Nepal and India, the mountain is known for unpredictable weather, dangerous ice sections, and physically exhausting routes.

Despite the harsh conditions, Sohail Sakhi successfully completed the climb after weeks of preparation and acclimatization.

Before reaching the summit, Sakhi was also part of the expedition’s rope-fixing team — a highly demanding role where climbers help prepare and secure routes for others during dangerous ascents.

Sohail Sakhi’s Growing List of Achievements

Sohail Sakhi is already recognized among Pakistan’s accomplished mountaineers. Over the years, he has successfully climbed several major peaks, including:

  • K2
  • Nanga Parbat
  • Gasherbrum I
  • Gasherbrum II

His successful ascent of Kangchenjunga further strengthens his reputation in the global climbing community and showcases the growing presence of Pakistani climbers on some of the world’s toughest mountains.

Pakistan’s Rising Presence in Global Mountaineering

Pakistan continues to gain international recognition in high-altitude mountaineering, with climbers from Hunza, Skardu, and other northern regions increasingly participating in major expeditions worldwide.

Sohail Sakhi’s latest accomplishment reflects not only personal determination but also the strength and resilience of Pakistan’s mountain athletes competing on the global stage.

His success is expected to inspire young climbers across the country who dream of pursuing mountaineering professionally.
